What is GalMaxx Alpha®

GalMaxx Alpha® is a new generation of hot dip galvanized steel coil that contains 95% Zinc, 5% Aluminum and trace amount of Magnesium.

Zinc based coatings are widely used for corrosion protection of flat steel products. However, there are some significant problems on regular Zinc coating such as microcracking issue after severe forming, red rust at cut edge and less durable against acid and alkaline environments. GalMaxx Alpha® provides an excellent performance under those conditions and can be used in most applications where the other Zinc coating types cannot be used as the durability against corrosion resistance and formability is excellent.

GalMaxx Alpha® forms a eutectic microstructure in which both the high Zinc phase and high Aluminum phase freeze at the same temperature. This unique combination (Zinc and Aluminum) offers better sacrificial protection than alloys with lower zinc composition and better passive barrier protection than regular galvanized steel. The intermetallic alloy layer that forms between the GalMaxx Alpha® coating and the steel substrate is very thin, thinner than a similar layer that forms on regular galvanized steel, and is the reason for the extremely good formability of GalMaxx Alpha®.

Cut edge resistance means that if the coating is cut, accidentally scratched or abraded away so as to expose the steel, the surrounding zinc then acts as a sacrificial anode and ‘heals the wound’ by corroding instead of the steel, thus delaying the rusting of the steel sheet.

GalMaxx Alpha exhibits excellent cut edge corrosion resistance similar to high Magnesium alloy steel and is much better than regular galvanized steel and galvalume. It offers more cathodic protection than galvalume due to high Zinc composition and trace amount of Magnesium.

Superior Formability

GalMaxx Alpha is able to be drawn in several directions simultaneously without cracking the coating. Excellent formability of GalMaxx® Alphais corresponding to the uniform surface, minimizing the point of cracking. In contrast, high Magnesium alloy steel, galvalume and regular galvanized steel showed different performances by having big cracks due to the spangle pattern.

 

An examination of surface at the bent parts and the condition of cracking of coating layer in the cross section in a 2T-180° bending test has revealed that GalMaxx Alpha is free from any microcracking.

Under alkaline condition, GalMaxx Alpha has superior performance similar to High Mg alloy steel. GalMax Alpha’s coating corrodes at a substantially lower rate than other coatings including regular galvanized steel and galvalume, supporting longer coating lives due to presence of trace amount of Magnesium added into the Al-Zn eutectic alloy. That will slow down the corrosion at a consistent pace.

Under acidic condition, GalMaxx Alpha has an 0.0 equivalent performance to high Magnesium alloy coated steel and clearly performs better than regular galvanized steel.

2X DURABILITY

GalMaxx Alpha ensures 2X durability as compared to regular galvanized steel in terms of coating weight reduction per year.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

The biggest advantage of GalMaxx Alpha over the other coatings is the superior corrosion resistance in the deformed state. The increased formability retains its superiority at bent portion subjected to 180° bending and improved corrosion resistance after deformation as illustrated in Figure 11.

  • GalMaxx Alpha is available in wide range of base metal thickness from 0.13mm up to 1.55mm and width from 600mm up to 1250mm as specified by user.
  • GalMaxx Alpha coating mass is available from Y06 (60g/m2)
  • Product grades : SZACC, SZAC440 and SZACH. Other grades are also available, depending on applications.
  • Surface Treatment : Anti-Finger Print Resin (Chromium or Chromium-Free)
